Chinese President Xi Jinping inaugurated the Beijing Winter Olympics today.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that through this sporting event, the Chinese government has been able to share the love on a global scale.
The head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, said the 24th Winter Olympics would send a message of peace, love and friendship to the world.
All participants wore masks at the opening ceremony. Due to the global epidemic of Corona, strict security measures have been taken during the Games and a highly secure biosecure environment has been set up for the athletes.
Several Western countries, including the United States, have boycotted the Games diplomatically, but Russian President Vladimir Putin, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, as well as heads of state and government, attended the opening ceremony.
Athletes from 91 countries, including the five-member Pakistani contingent, took part in a special parade at the opening ceremony at the National Stadium in the capital, Beijing.
A total of about 30,000 athletes are participating in these competitions. Apart from this, various entertainment events have also been organized on this occasion.
With these competitions, China has now become the only city to host the Winter and Summer Olympics. The 2008 Summer Olympics were held in Beijing 14 years ago.
Strong competition is expected for 109 gold medals in these competitions which will continue till February 20.
This time around, there is a risk that the Games will be disrupted due to the global epidemic of Corona and the diplomatic boycott of Western countries. China’s support for Russia’s position in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and Russia has also angered Western nations. German Chancellor Olaf Schulz also said he would not go to Beijing, but the countries have sent their own athletes.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan has also arrived in Beijing on a four-day visit to China with a delegation. During the visit, he will hold meetings with the Chinese President and Prime Minister as well as a number of trade delegations aimed at increasing foreign investment in Pakistan and finalizing important development projects in the country.
