The governance of law in Pakistan is under severe threat, warns the United Nations.

Geneva: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has stated that the governance of law in Pakistan is under severe threat.

Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, Turk said that there has been an increase in violence and arrests in Pakistan, which is a cause for concern.

He stated that arrests under the pretext of preventive detention, as allowed by discretionary laws, are equivalent to violations of human rights. There is concern over cases being tried in military courts against civilians.
