Babar Azam is being appointed as the captain of the national team for all three formats until the 2023 World Cup in India.
Earlier this month, PCB Chairman Najam Sethi had announced Babar as the captain only for the New Zealand series.
In recent interviews, Sethi offered conditional support for Babar and stated that the captaincy would only be changed if the team kept losing, with the final decision being made with the consultation of Mickey Arthur.
Arthur had recently visited Pakistan for a brief tour and during a press conference on Thursday, it was announced that he had been appointed as Pakistan’s team director.
During his visit, Arthur met with Sethi and expressed his support for Babar’s captaincy, stating that he had the ability to take the team in the right direction and therefore there was no reason for a change in leadership. Sethi had already accepted Arthur’s recommendation.
Babar has a good record as captain in the limited-overs formats, but the team failed to win a single home test under his leadership in 2022. Nevertheless, Arthur wants Babar to lead the team in the Test series against Sri Lanka in July.
