Hajj 2026: What to Expect

Hajj — the fifth pillar of Islam — is a pilgrimage that every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it must perform at least once in their lifetime. In 2026, Hajj is expected to take place between approximately June 4-9, 2026 (8-13 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH), subject to moon sighting. For Pakistani pilgrims, the journey begins months in advance with registration, documentation, and preparation.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony manages Pakistan's Hajj programme, allocating quotas among the four provinces, Islamabad, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. In recent years, Pakistan's total Hajj quota has been approximately 179,000-184,000 pilgrims, divided between the government (苦达里) scheme and private tour operators.

Registration and Documentation

The Hajj registration process typically begins 6-8 months before the pilgrimage. Here is what Pakistani pilgrims need to know:

Government Scheme: Applications are submitted through the Ministry of Religious Affairs' online portal. The balloting system allocates spots randomly among applicants. Successful applicants receive a registration number and are assigned a camp in Mina and accommodation in Makkah. The government scheme typically costs between Rs 450,000-650,000 depending on the accommodation category and travel arrangements.

Private Scheme: Registered Hajj tour operators offer packages ranging from economy to premium. Private packages typically cost Rs 600,000-1,200,000 depending on accommodation proximity to the Haram, transportation quality, and additional services. Always verify that your operator is licensed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Required documents:

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity from travel date)
  • CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card)
  • Recent passport-sized photographs with white background
  • COVID-19 vaccination certificate (requirements may vary by year)
  • Hajj visa (processed through the Saudi embassy or approved operators)
  • Medical fitness certificate from a government-approved medical center
  • Bank challan confirming Hajj deposit payment

Health Preparations

Hajj is physically demanding — involving long walks in extreme heat, large crowds, and extended periods of standing and physical activity. Proper health preparation is essential:

Vaccinations: The Saudi Ministry of Health requires meningitis (ACWY) vaccination for all pilgrims. Additional recommended vaccinations include seasonal influenza, COVID-19 boosters, and hepatitis A and B. Consult a travel medicine clinic at least 2 months before departure.

Physical fitness: Begin a gradual exercise program 2-3 months before Hajj. Focus on walking (aim for 30 minutes daily), light cardiovascular exercise, and leg strengthening. The walk from Mina to Arafat and the tawaf around the Kaaba require significant physical endurance.

Medical conditions: If you have chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, asthma), ensure your condition is well-controlled before departure. Carry sufficient medication (with doctor's prescription) for the entire duration. Inform your travel companions and camp authorities about your medical needs.

Heat protection: Temperatures in Makkah during Hajj season regularly exceed 40°C. Carry a portable umbrella, wear light-colored loose clothing, and drink water frequently — at least 3-4 liters daily. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are among the most common medical emergencies during Hajj.

What to Pack

  • Ihram clothing — two seamless white garments for men; modest, loose clothing for women
  • Comfortable walking shoes — broken-in, easy to slip on and off (you will remove them frequently)
  • Medications — carry in original packaging with prescriptions
  • Sun protection — sunscreen (SPF 50+), umbrella, sunglasses, hat
  • Personal hygiene items — unscented soap, toothbrush, towel, hand sanitizer
  • Mobile phone — with international roaming or local Saudi SIM
  • Emergency contacts — written on paper as well as in your phone
  • Small backpack — for carrying essentials during daily rituals
  • Quran and prayer mat — compact and lightweight
  • Cash and cards — Saudi Riyals for expenses; keep valuables in a money belt

Key Rituals: A Day-by-Day Guide

Day 1 (8 Dhul Hijjah — Yaum al-Tarwiyah): Enter the state of Ihram at the Miqat point. Proceed to Mina and stay overnight. Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha combined (shortened).

Day 2 (9 Dhul Hijjah — Yaum al-Arafah): The most important day. Move to Arafat after sunrise. Spend the day in supplication and prayer. After sunset, proceed to Muzdalifah without praying Maghrib at Arafat. Collect pebbles at Muzdalifah for the next day's stoning.

Day 3 (10 Dhul Hijjah — Yaum al-Nahr/Eid): Stone the Jamrat (pillars) in Mina. Sacrifice an animal (hadyy). Shave or trim your hair (halq or taqsir). Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah at the Kaaba. Stay in Mina.

Days 4-5 (11-12 Dhul Hijjah): Stone all three Jamrat each day. You may leave Mina before sunset on the 12th. Perform Tawaf al-Wida (farewell tawaf) before departing Makkah.

Tips from Experienced Pilgrims

  • Patience is essential. Crowds, delays, and discomfort are part of the experience. Maintain a calm and forgiving attitude.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink water even when you do not feel thirsty. Dehydration happens quickly in Makkah's heat.
  • Follow the crowd flow. Do not fight against the current of people. Move with the flow, especially during tawaf and stoning.
  • Keep your group together. Use a meeting point system in case of separation. Carry a card with your accommodation address in Arabic.
  • Make dua constantly. Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Use every moment for supplication, reflection, and connection with Allah.

Hajj is one of the most profound experiences a Muslim can have. With proper preparation, it becomes not just a journey of physical endurance, but a transformative spiritual experience that lasts a lifetime.
