Benchmark tests across hardware configurations reveal that enforcing Memory Integrity can reduce minimum frame rates by anywhere from 5 to 25 percent depending on the title. CPU-bound games such as Counter-Strike 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Flight Simulator 2024 bear the heaviest brunt. The performance hit manifests not only as lower average frames per second (FPS) but also as frame pacing stutters and input lag—a critical disadvantage in competitive multiplayer titles.
Microsoft previously acknowledged the conflict between top-tier security and gaming throughput when Windows 11 launched. At the time, the company allowed users to toggle VBS off and provided support pages detailing how gamers could disable Core Isolation to maximize hardware output. That posture is now shifting from user discretion to enforced protection.
"Windows quality updates will begin enabling memory integrity protection on eligible devices," announced Peter Waxman, Group Program Manager at Microsoft. "If not already enabled, these updates will also enable Virtualization-based Security (VBS), helping make additional security capabilities available and reflecting our commitment to making Windows secure by default."
The engineering shift reflects Microsoft's post-exploit strategy. Cybercriminals increasingly target third-party kernel drivers—often found in legacy hardware utilities, older anti-cheat engines, and motherboard software—to bypass standard antivirus tools. By establishing VBS as a mandatory baseline across the global ecosystem of hundreds of millions of machines, Microsoft aims to eliminate entire classes of kernel-level vulnerabilities at once.
For millions of desktop users who built custom PCs or bought pre-built gaming systems with VBS previously toggled off, the upcoming monthly update will quietly flip the setting back on. Gamers who painstakingly tuned their systems for optimal hardware efficiency may find their frame rates dropping overnight without knowing a background update caused the degradation.
The severity of the slowdown depends heavily on hardware generation. Processors featuring hardware-accelerated virtualization capabilities—such as Intel 11th Gen Core CPUs onwards and AMD Ryzen 3000 series or newer—utilize specialized silicon instructions (Mode-Based Execution Control) to minimize VBS overhead. On these newer platforms, the performance degradation is smaller, typically sitting between 3% and 8%.
Older hardware setups, however, lack advanced hardware-level translation features. On machines running 8th or 9th Gen Intel chips or first-generation AMD Ryzen processors, the lack of dedicated hardware acceleration forces the system to simulate memory protection in software. On these setups, the performance drop becomes severe enough to degrade smooth gameplay entirely.
For users who prioritize raw gaming execution over isolated hypervisor defense, Windows 11 still provides manual controls within the interface. Navigating to Windows Security > Device Security > Core Isolation details allows users to toggle Memory Integrity off manually. A full system reboot is required for the changes to take effect. However, power users should note that future cumulative updates may periodically re-evaluate device eligibility and prompt or automatically re-enable the feature unless explicitly controlled via Group Policy or Registry keys.
