Israeli settler attacks in Palestinian-ruled West Bank areas have nearly doubled since 2025, igniting fears of a broader settlement push.
Since 2025, violent attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank’s Areas A and B—regions under direct Palestinian Authority control—have nearly doubled, according to a report by the Israeli human rights organization Yesh Din. The surge coincides with settlers’ self-declared “great settlement revolution,” targeting the very heart of territories designated for a future Palestinian state under the 1995 Oslo Accords.
Data from Yesh Din, shared exclusively with the Guardian, reveals that nearly two-thirds of settler violence incidents in 2026 occurred in these Palestinian-administered areas. This marks a dramatic shift from previous years, when such attacks were concentrated in Israeli-controlled zones. The escalation raises alarms about the fragility of Palestinian governance and the broader implications for the region’s stability.
The Oslo Accords divided the West Bank into three administrative areas: Area A (full Palestinian control), Area B (shared control), and Area C (Israeli control). For decades, settler violence primarily targeted Area C, where Israeli settlements are most concentrated. However, the recent surge in Areas A and B signals a deliberate strategy to undermine Palestinian authority and expand settlement footprints into territories long considered the backbone of a future state.
“This is not random violence,” said Lior Amistad, executive director of Yesh Din. “It’s a coordinated effort to destabilize Palestinian governance and assert Israeli dominance in areas where they have no legal jurisdiction.”
In villages like Burin and Asira al-Qibliya, residents describe nightly raids by settlers, who destroy crops, vandalize homes, and assault locals with impunity. Palestinian security forces, bound by Oslo-era restrictions, often cannot intervene without Israeli approval, leaving communities vulnerable. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have been criticized for failing to hold perpetrators accountable, with Yesh Din reporting a 90% failure rate in settler violence investigations since 2005.
The economic toll is staggering. Farmers in Area B have abandoned olive groves—a lifeline for many families—due to repeated attacks. Schools and clinics have been forced to close during peak violence periods, disrupting basic services for thousands.
The violence exacerbates tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, already strained by stalled peace talks and expanding settlements in Area C. International observers warn that the erosion of Palestinian control in Areas A and B could dismantle the last vestiges of the two-state solution framework.
For ordinary Palestinians, the implications are dire. “We’re trapped between settlers who want our land and a government that can’t protect us,” said Fatima al-Masri, a teacher in Nablus. “Even areas supposed to be ours aren’t safe anymore.”
As the international community watches, the question remains: Will this unchecked aggression redefine the West Bank’s future—or will it spark a reckoning for those enabling it?
The recent surge in settler violence primarily targets Areas A and B of the West Bank, which are under Palestinian Authority control as per the 1995 Oslo Accords.
Palestinian security forces face restrictions under the Oslo Accords, often requiring Israeli approval to intervene, leaving them limited in their ability to protect residents from settler violence.
Settler attacks have led to the abandonment of olive groves, a key livelihood source, and forced closures of schools and clinics, disrupting essential services and deepening economic hardship for Palestinian communities.
