Pakistan's Space Programme: From SUPARCO to Mars — What Lies Ahead

Pakistan's space agency SUPARCO is charting an ambitious path from Earth observation to interplanetary exploration. Here is what the country's space future looks like.

SUPARCO: A Brief History

Pakistan's journey into space began in 1961, when the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) was established — making it one of the oldest space agencies in Asia. SUPARCO's early achievements include the launch of Badr-I in 1990, making Pakistan the first Muslim-majority country to launch a satellite into orbit.

Since then, SUPARCO has developed expertise in satellite manufacturing, launch services, and remote sensing. The organization has launched several communication and Earth observation satellites, including the Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite (PRSS) series, which provides high-resolution imagery for agriculture monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management.

Current Missions and Capabilities

In 2026, SUPARCO is operating a constellation of satellites that provide critical services to Pakistan:

  • PRSS-1 (Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite-1) — launched in 2018, providing multispectral imagery for agriculture, water resources, and environmental monitoring. The satellite covers Pakistan's entire territory with a revisit time of 2-3 days.
  • PakTES-1A (Pakistan Technology Evaluation Satellite) — launched in 2018, demonstrating indigenous satellite development capabilities.
  • PRSS-2 (planned 2026) — the next-generation Earth observation satellite with enhanced resolution and spectral capabilities, designed for precision agriculture and climate monitoring.

SUPARCO's ground infrastructure includes satellite control centers in Karachi and Islamabad, a遥感 data processing facility, and a network of ground stations that receive and process satellite data in real time.

The Mars Ambition

Perhaps the most exciting development in Pakistan's space programme is the announcement of a Mars exploration study. While a full-scale Mars mission remains decades away, SUPARCO has established a dedicated study group to assess the technical, financial, and scientific requirements for a Pakistani Mars mission.

The study group, which includes scientists from SUPARCO, Pakistani universities, and international collaborators, is focusing on three areas: spacecraft design, life support systems, and scientific instruments for Martian surface exploration. The group has already completed preliminary designs for a Mars orbiter that could be launched as early as 2035.

While this timeline is ambitious, it is not unrealistic. Countries like the UAE (Hope orbiter), China (Tianwen-1), and India (Mangalyaan) have demonstrated that relatively new space nations can achieve interplanetary missions within 15-20 years of establishing their programmes.

The Commercial Space Opportunity

Beyond government missions, Pakistan's private sector is beginning to explore commercial space opportunities. Several Pakistani startups are developing satellite technology, space-based services, and launch capabilities:

  • Satellite-based internet. Pakistani companies are partnering with global satellite internet providers to extend broadband coverage to underserved rural areas.
  • Earth observation services. Startups are developing value-added services using satellite imagery — from crop yield prediction to real-time traffic management.
  • Space tourism and education. Educational institutions are incorporating space science into curricula, preparing the next generation of Pakistani scientists and engineers for careers in the space industry.

International Collaboration

Pakistan's space ambitions are supported by growing international partnerships. SUPARCO has signed cooperation agreements with NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), CNSA (China National Space Administration), and Roscosmos (Russia). These partnerships provide access to launch facilities, technical expertise, and scientific data that would be difficult to develop independently.

The China-Pakistan space cooperation is particularly significant, with joint satellite development projects, training programmes for Pakistani scientists, and potential access to China's lunar and Mars missions. The recent quantum communication link between Beijing and Islamabad — using space-based quantum key distribution — demonstrates the depth of this technological partnership.

Challenges Ahead

Pakistan's space programme faces significant challenges. Annual funding for SUPARCO remains modest compared to agencies like ISRO (India), which operates on a budget 20 times larger. The brain drain of Pakistani scientists to international agencies and foreign universities is another concern.

However, the trajectory is positive. With growing government investment, increasing international partnerships, and a young generation of talented scientists and engineers, Pakistan's space programme is poised for significant growth. The journey from Badr-I to Mars is long, but each satellite launched and each experiment conducted brings Pakistan one step closer to the stars.
