As Trump engages with Kim Jong-un, South Korea fears being sidelined in a high-stakes diplomatic dance.
In the delicate dance of diplomacy between Washington and Pyongyang, South Korea finds itself in an increasingly precarious position. As former President Donald Trump renews his courtship of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, experts warn that Seoul's interests may be sacrificed in a high-stakes game of geopolitical poker.
Trump's approach to foreign policy has always been transactional, and his dealings with North Korea are no exception. In 2018, he became the first sitting U.S. president to meet with a North Korean leader, a move that was both historic and controversial. Now, as Trump seeks to revive his legacy, he appears willing to engage with Kim once again, but at what cost to South Korea?
'The U.S.-South Korea alliance is built on trust and shared values,' said Dr. Minseon Ku, a professor of international relations at Seoul National University. 'But Trump's willingness to negotiate directly with Kim without consulting Seoul raises concerns about the longevity of that trust.'
Meanwhile, North Korea has been steadily raising the price of its engagement with the U.S. In recent months, Pyongyang has demanded the lifting of economic sanctions, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Korean Peninsula, and the recognition of North Korea as a nuclear state. These demands have put Trump in a difficult position, as conceding to them would be seen as a significant victory for Kim and a betrayal of South Korea.
According to a report by the Korea Herald, North Korea's economy has been severely impacted by international sanctions, with its GDP contracting by an estimated 3.5% in 2025. However, Kim's regime has shown a remarkable ability to adapt, developing new sources of revenue through cybercrime and illicit trade.
In Seoul, there is a growing sense of anxiety about being sidelined in the negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong alliance with the U.S., but there are concerns that Trump may prioritize his own political interests over those of South Korea.
'We cannot afford to be left out of the conversation,' said a senior South Korean official, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'Our security and economic interests are directly tied to the outcome of these negotiations.'
As the diplomatic dance between Trump and Kim continues, the people of South Korea are left to wonder about their place in this high-stakes game. With the future of the Korean Peninsula hanging in the balance, one thing is clear: the decisions made in the coming months will have profound implications for the region and beyond.
