About the Steel Weight Calculator

Cement, sand, bricks, crush and steel dominate a construction budget, and their quantities are easy to get wrong. This Steel Weight Calculator estimates the quantity and cost of the key materials for your build from the covered area or the specific structure you are constructing.

The calculation uses standard construction ratios — for example, the bags of cement and cubic feet of sand needed per square foot of construction, and the number of bricks per square foot of wall — giving you a bill of quantities to check against supplier quotes.

Material prices fluctuate with the market: cement, steel and sand all moved significantly in recent years in Pakistan. Because every rate is an input, you can re-run the calculation whenever prices change and keep your budget current.

A reliable quantity estimate is your defence against both over-ordering (wasted money) and under-ordering (delays while prices rise). Take this bill of quantities to suppliers and compare quotes line by line.

How to estimate construction materials

  1. 1

Enter the covered area or structure dimensions (walls, slab, etc.).

  2. 2

Adjust current material rates — cement per bag, sand and crush per cubic foot.

  3. 3

Read the quantity and cost of each material, updated live.

  4. 4

Compare the totals with supplier quotes before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the d²/162 formula?

Steel weight (kg/m) = diameter² ÷ 162. A 12 mm bar weighs 0.888 kg/m; a 40-foot bar weighs about 10.8 kg.

How many bags of cement does a house need?

A typical Pakistani house needs roughly 0.5–0.7 bags of cement per square foot of covered area, so a 1,000 sq ft build uses around 500–700 bags. The exact figure depends on the structural design.

How many bricks are in a square foot of wall?

Standard Pakistani brick walls use about 4–5 bricks per square foot for a 9-inch wall and 2.5–3 for a 4.5-inch wall, before wastage of roughly 5%.
