Ahmad Shah Massoud

Ahmad Shah Massoud (June 2, 1953 – September 9, 2001) was an Afghan military leader and politician who was the leading anti-Taliban commander during the Afghan Civil War. Known as the 'Lion of Panjshir' for his resistance in the Panjshir Valley, Massoud was a brilliant military strategist who successfully defended the valley against multiple Soviet and Taliban offensives. He was the military leader of the United Front (Northern Alliance) and played a crucial role in resisting Taliban rule. Massoud was assassinated by al-Qaeda suicide bombers on September 9, 2001, just two days before the 9/11 attacks. His death is considered a significant loss for Afghanistan, and he is celebrated as a national hero. His son, Ahmad Massoud, has continued his father's legacy by leading resistance against the Taliban after 2021.
