Akhtar Mengal

Akhtar Mengal is a Pakistani politician who leads the Balochistan National Party (Mengal), one of the most influential political forces in Balochistan. He belongs to the Mengal tribe, one of the province's most prominent Sardar families, and is the son of the late Sardar Ataullah Mengal, a former chief minister of Balochistan.

Political career

Akhtar Mengal was first elected to the Balochistan Assembly in 1990 and became the province's Chief Minister in 1997 at the head of a coalition government. His tenure was cut short in 1998, and he spent years in prison and self-exile during the Musharraf era, becoming a symbol of Baloch political resistance.

He has since been repeatedly elected to the National Assembly from his home constituency of Khuzdar, and his party has been a persistent voice for Baloch rights, provincial autonomy and the resolution of the province's grievances. He has also served in coalition governments at the centre and has been a vocal critic of military operations in the province.

Legacy

Akhtar Mengal is regarded as the most prominent political leader of Balochistan's nationalist movement, respected for his principled stands on provincial rights. His party remains a key force in Balochistan's electoral politics.
