Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is a Pakistani politician who serves as the chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Born on 21 September 1988 in Karachi, he is the son of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and former president Asif Ali Zardari, making him the heir of Pakistan's most storied political dynasty.

Political career

Bilawal was thrust into politics at age 19, when he was named chairman of the PPP in 2007 following his mother's assassination — while he was still a student at the University of Oxford. After completing his studies in 2010, he took an active role in leading the party, gradually modernising its outreach and campaigning vigorously across the country.

He won his first elected office in 2018, taking the ancestral seat of Naudero in Sindh, and in 2022 he was appointed Foreign Minister in the coalition government of Shehbaz Sharif — the youngest person to hold the office in Pakistan's history. His tenure was marked by a high-profile diplomatic push on climate justice for developing countries and continued engagement with major powers.

Legacy

Bilawal represents the third generation of the Bhutto political dynasty, following his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and his mother Benazir Bhutto, both of whom served as prime minister. He is regarded as the most prominent young leader in Pakistani politics and the natural standard-bearer of the PPP as it seeks to expand beyond its stronghold of Sindh.
