B.P. Koirala

Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala (B.P. Koirala) (April 8, 1914 – July 21, 1982) was the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Nepal, serving from 1959 to 1960. Born in Varanasi, India, he was a prominent leader of Nepal's democratic movement and a member of the influential Koirala political family. He led the Nepali Congress party and fought for democracy against the Rana oligarchy. After the 1951 revolution, he became the first Prime Minister elected through free elections in 1959. His government was overthrown by King Mahendra in 1960, and he spent years in prison and exile. B.P. Koirala is also known as a gifted writer and has authored several literary works including novels and short stories. He is considered the 'Father of Democracy' in Nepal and his legacy continues to inspire democratic movements across South Asia.
