Cyrus the Great

Cyrus the Great (circa 600-530 BC) was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, the largest empire the world had ever seen. Born in Anshan (modern-day Iran), Cyrus united the Persian tribes and conquered the Median, Lydian, and Babylonian empires, creating an empire that stretched from the Aegean Sea to the Indus River. Cyrus is celebrated not only for his military genius but also for his revolutionary approach to governance. The Cyrus Cylinder, created after his conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, is considered the first declaration of human rights, granting freedom of religion and self-governance to conquered peoples. Cyrus's legacy has influenced democratic thought throughout history and has been studied by leaders from Thomas Jefferson to modern human rights advocates. He remains the most celebrated figure in Iranian history, and Cyrus the Great Day is celebrated annually by Iranians worldwide.
