Hamid Karzai

Hamid Karzai, born on December 24, 1957, in Karz, Afghanistan, served as the President of Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014. He was the first democratically elected president of Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban regime. Born into a prominent Pashtun family from Kandahar, Karzai was educated in India and lived in exile during the Soviet occupation and Taliban era. He played a crucial role in the Bonn Conference of 2001 that established the post-Taliban government. As president, he navigated the complex dynamics of post-war Afghanistan, dealing with the insurgency, warlords, and international donors. Despite criticism of corruption and governance failures, Karzai is credited with holding the country together during a turbulent period.
