Imran Khan

Imran Khan is a Pakistani politician and former international cricketer who served as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022. Born on 5 October 1952 in Lahore to a Pashtun family, he studied at Aitchison College and the Royal Grammar School Worcester before attending Keble College, Oxford.

Cricket career

Imran made his Test debut for Pakistan in 1971 and captained the national team from 1982 to 1992. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history, taking 362 Test wickets and scoring 3,807 Test runs. His defining achievement came in 1992, when he led Pakistan to its first and only Cricket World Cup title, triumphing over England in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He retired from cricket shortly afterwards.

Political career

Imran entered politics in 1996, founding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). After two decades in opposition, his party won the 2018 general election, and he became Prime Minister. His government focused on anti-corruption, poverty alleviation (through programmes such as the Ehsaas initiative) and the construction of the Kartarpur Corridor. He was removed from office in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote, and he subsequently became the leader of a major opposition movement, facing a series of legal cases and convictions that have kept him at the centre of Pakistani politics.

Philanthropy and legacy

Imran founded the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore and the Namal University in Mianwali. He also served as chancellor of the University of Bradford. He has been married three times, most recently to Bushra Bibi. Regardless of one's view of his politics, he remains one of the most recognisable and consequential public figures in modern Pakistan, having reshaped the country's political landscape.
