Kemal Ataturk

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (1881-1938) was the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. Born in Thessaloniki, then part of the Ottoman Empire, Ataturk was a military officer who became a national hero during World War I for his role in the Gallipoli campaign. After the war, he led the Turkish War of Independence and established the modern Turkish Republic. As president, he implemented sweeping secular reforms that transformed Turkey from an Ottoman theocracy into a modern nation-state. His reforms included adopting the Latin alphabet, granting women's suffrage, establishing secular education, and modernizing the legal system.
