Laxmi Prasad Devkota

Laxmi Prasad Devkota (November 12, 1909 – September 14, 1959) is considered the greatest poet in the Nepali language and is honored with the title 'Mahakavi' (Great Poet). Born in Kathmandu, he wrote epic poems, sonnets, and other literary works that explored themes of nature, love, patriotism, and the human condition. His most famous works include 'Muna Madan,' a narrative poem that became the best-selling Nepali literary work, and 'Sulochana,' a play based on the Ramayana. Devkota's poetry is characterized by its lyrical beauty, emotional depth, and vivid imagery. He was also a scholar of Sanskrit and wrote in multiple languages. Despite dying young at age 49, his literary legacy continues to inspire Nepali literature. November 14, his birthday, is celebrated as National Poetry Day in Nepal.
