Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948), widely known as Mahatma Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who led India's non-violent independence movement against British rule. His philosophy of non-violent resistance (satyagraha) inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He is officially honored as the "Father of the Nation" in India. Born in Porbandar, Gujarat, Gandhi studied law in London and practiced in South Africa for 21 years, where he developed his philosophy of non-violent resistance. Returning to India in 1915, he quickly became the leader of the Indian National Congress and launched campaigns against British colonial rule. Gandhi's most significant campaigns include the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the Salt March (1930), and the Quit India Movement (1942). The Salt March, in which he walked 390 kilometers to the sea to make salt in defiance of British salt taxes, became one of the most iconic acts of civil disobedience in history. His philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (truth-force) influenced leaders worldwide, including Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama. Gandhi lived a simple life, wore homespun cloth (khadi), and advocated for self-reliance, communal harmony, and the upliftment of the "untouchables" (whom he called Harijan). He undertook multiple fasts to protest social injustices and promote peace. He was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist who opposed Gandhi's philosophy of Hindu-Muslim unity. His legacy continues to inspire billions of people around the world.
