Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017) was an Iranian mathematician and the first woman to win the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics. Born in Tehran, Mirzakhani showed exceptional mathematical ability from a young age, winning gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad. She went on to study at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran before earning her PhD at Harvard University. Mirzakhani became a professor at Stanford University, where she made groundbreaking contributions to the geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. Her work combined insights from hyperbolic geometry, algebraic geometry, and dynamical systems in revolutionary ways. The Fields Medal, which she received in 2014, recognized her 'outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.' Mirzakhani's passing in 2017 from cancer was mourned worldwide, and she remains an inspiration for women in STEM fields globally.
