Mohammad Khatami

Mohammad Khatami, born on October 14, 1943, in Ardakan, Iran, served as the President of Iran from 1997 to 2005. He was the reformist president who won a landslide victory in 1997 on a platform of 'Dialogue Among Civilizations' and political/social reforms. His presidency saw a brief period of cultural opening, press freedom, and civil society growth in Iran. However, his reforms were frequently blocked by hardline institutions. Khatami has a PhD in philosophy from Glasgow Caledonian University. Despite the restrictions on his political activities, he remains an influential figure in Iranian reformist politics and continues to advocate for democratic reforms.
