Mullah Omar

Mullah Mohammed Omar (1960–2013) was the founder and supreme leader of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan. Born in Kandahar Province, he was a former madrassa teacher who became the leader of the Taliban after they emerged in the early 1990s. Under his leadership, the Taliban captured Kabul in 1996 and established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He was declared 'Amir al-Mu'minin' (Commander of the Faithful). After the US invasion in 2001, he went into hiding and led the Taliban insurgency for over a decade. He died in 2013 in Pakistan, though his death was not confirmed until 2015. His legacy remains one of the most controversial and impactful in modern Afghan history.
