Murad Ali Shah

Syed Murad Ali Shah is a Pakistani politician serving as the Chief Minister of Sindh, a position he has held since July 2016. Born on 8 November 1962 in Karachi, he is the son of former chief minister Syed Abdullah Ali Shah, and he belongs to the politically influential Makhdoom family of the province.

Career

A chartered accountant by profession, Murad Ali Shah joined the Pakistan Peoples Party and was first elected to the Sindh Assembly in 2002. He served as Senior Minister for Finance in the Sindh cabinet from 2008, and was appointed Chief Minister in 2016 after the death of his predecessor Qaim Ali Shah. He retained the office after the 2018 and 2024 elections, making him the longest-serving current chief minister in Pakistan.

His administration has overseen major infrastructure projects in Karachi — including the city's road network, water schemes and public transport — while grappling with the challenges of urban flooding, housing and the city's municipal governance. He is known for his technocratic, low-key style and his close relationship with the Bhutto-Zardari family.

Legacy

Murad Ali Shah is regarded as the most durable administrator in Sindh's history, steering the province through floods, the COVID-19 pandemic and repeated urban crises. He remains the PPP's undisputed leader in the province's government.
