Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) was an Indian poet, writer, composer, and painter who reshaped Bengali literature and music. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1913) for his collection of poems "Gitanjali." He is also the only person to have composed the national anthems of two countries — India ("Jana Gana Mana") and Bangladesh ("Amar Sonar Bangla"). Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), Tagore was the youngest of 13 surviving children of the wealthy Tagore family. He was largely educated at home and traveled to London briefly to study law. He rejected formal education and instead immersed himself in literature, music, and philosophy. Tagore's most famous works include "Gitanjali" (1910), "Ghare-Baire" (The Home and the World, 1916), "Jana Gana Mana" (1911, India's national anthem), "Amar Sonar Bangla" (1905, Bangladesh's national anthem), and "Jana Gana Mana" (Sri Lanka's national anthem). He was also a prolific painter, with his art exhibited across the world. In 1921, Tagore founded Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, West Bengal, which became a unique institution blending Eastern and Western educational philosophies. He was knighted by the British Crown in 1915 but renounced the honor in 1919 as a protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He passed away on 7 August 1941, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape Indian and world literature.
