Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel (31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950), widely known as Sardar Patel, was an Indian independence activist and the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India. He is credited with integrating over 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence, earning him the title "Iron Man of India." Born in Nadiad, Gujarat, Patel was a successful lawyer before entering politics. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and played a key role in the Bardoli Satyagraha (1928), where he led farmers in a successful tax revolt against the British. His organizational skills and decisive leadership made him one of the most important leaders of the Indian independence movement. After independence, Patel's most significant achievement was the integration of the princely states. Through a combination of diplomacy, persuasion, and firm action, he convinced over 560 princely states to join the Indian Union. His handling of Hyderabad (through Operation Polo) and Junagadh demonstrated his political acumen and determination. Patel also played a crucial role in establishing law and order in the newly independent India, managing the challenges of Partition, and building the Indian administrative system. He passed away on 15 December 1950. The Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the world's tallest statue at 182 meters, was built in his honor in 2018.
