Biography

Sarfaraz Ahmed is a Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman who captained the national team to its greatest modern triumph — victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. Born on 22 May 1987 in Karachi, he rose through the ranks as a teenager, captaining Pakistan to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2006.

Career

Sarfaraz made his international debut in 2007 but established himself as the first-choice wicketkeeper in 2013. He took over the captaincy in 2017 and led Pakistan to a stunning Champions Trophy final win over India, with his composed leadership earning widespread praise. He also led Pakistan to No. 1 in the T20I rankings in 2018.

His captaincy ended in 2019 after the World Cup, and he has since remained a senior player, with a memorable Test comeback in 2022-23 that included a match-winning century against New Zealand in Karachi. He has been a mainstay of Pakistan's red-ball setup and a veteran presence in the dressing room.

Legacy

Sarfaraz Ahmed is remembered as the captain who ended Pakistan's long trophy drought, and his passionate, emotional leadership style made him one of the most beloved figures in recent Pakistani cricket.
