Shehbaz Sharif

Shehbaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician serving as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Born on 23 September 1951 in Lahore, he is the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif and has been a central figure in the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) for decades.

Career

Shehbaz is best known for his record as Chief Minister of Punjab, an office he held three times (1997-99, 2008-13, 2013-18). Under his stewardship, Punjab became known for its infrastructure development — schools, hospitals, roads and transport projects — and for the introduction of technology-based service delivery. He earned a reputation as a hands-on administrator, earning the nickname "Ustad" (teacher) for his management style.

He first became Prime Minister in April 2022 after a no-confidence motion removed Imran Khan, serving until the 2023 elections and leading the coalition through a period of economic crisis, including negotiations for an IMF programme. After the February 2024 elections, he returned as Prime Minister at the head of a coalition government, focusing on economic stabilisation, foreign investment and regional cooperation.

Shehbaz Sharif is regarded as one of Pakistan's most experienced administrators, with a long record of political office across four decades. He has also been a vocal advocate for stronger Pakistan-China relations and regional trade connectivity.
