Biography
Suleyman Demirel (1924-2015) was one of the most prominent Turkish politicians of the 20th century, serving as Prime Minister seven times and as the 9th President of Turkey from 1993 to 2000. Born in Isparta, Demirel was an engineer who became leader of the Justice Party. His political career was marked by the turbulent period of Turkish politics in the 1960s and 1970s, which saw multiple military coups. Demirel was known for his populist style and many famous sayings. As President, he worked to strengthen democratic institutions and civil-military relations in Turkey.
