Tenzing Norgay

Tenzing Norgay (1914 – May 26, 1986) was a Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer who, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, was one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Born in Tibet, Tenzing settled in the Khumbu region of Nepal and became one of the most experienced climbers of his era. He participated in seven Everest expeditions before finally reaching the summit. After his historic achievement, he became a global figure and was awarded the George Medal by the British government. He lived the rest of his life in Darjeeling, India, where he established the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Tenzing's achievement is celebrated as one of the greatest feats in human exploration.
