Vattagamani Abhaya (Valagamba)

Vattagamani Abhaya, also known as Valagamba, was a king of the Anuradhapura Kingdom who reigned from 89–77 BC and again from 77–27 BC. He is credited with the construction of the Abhayagiri monastery and stupa, which became one of the most important centers of Buddhist learning in the ancient world. His reign is also significant for the establishment of the Mahavihara tradition in Sri Lankan Buddhism. Valagamba's story of regaining his throne after years of exile is a tale of perseverance and determination that has inspired Sri Lankans for centuries.
