PTI leader Sohail Afridi challenges Bilawal Bhutto's party to surrender the presidency and Senate chair before joining anti-government street agitation.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Sohail Afridi threw down a political gauntlet to the Pakistan Peoples Party on September 7, 2026, challenging Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s party to surrender its high-ranking constitutional offices—including the presidency, Senate chairmanship, and provincial governorships—if it wishes to join the national opposition coalition. The demand directly targets the dual political posture of the PPP, which continues to enjoy constitutional patronage under the ruling coalition while attempting to distance itself from unpopular economic policies.
Speaking during a media interaction in Peshawar, Afridi highlighted that PTI remains actively engaged in street protests across the country, battling legal hurdles and political suppression. He argued that any political alliance with PPP remains contingent on tangible political sacrifices, starting with the resignation of President Asif Ali Zardari, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, and the governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Since the general elections of February 2024, the Pakistan Peoples Party has navigated an intricate arrangement with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. While refusing to accept formal cabinet portfolios in the federal ministry led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PPP secured the premier constitutional prizes of the state. Asif Ali Zardari reclaimed the presidency, Yousaf Raza Gillani assumed the helm of the Senate, and PPP nominees took key gubernatorial posts in major provinces.
This arrangement allowed PPP to wield vast legislative and constitutional leverage while maintaining political distance from federal austerity measures, rising electricity tariffs, and tax hikes imposed under International Monetary Fund agreements.
Sohail Afridi’s public invitation exposes this precise contradiction. By demanding that PPP vacate these constitutional seats, PTI aims to strip away the party’s shield of institutional power. "You cannot sit on the president's chair in Islamabad while claiming to feel the pain of the public on the streets," Afridi stated. "If the PPP wants to oppose the incumbent administration, it must first step down from the offices granted by this ruling coalition."
The proposal comes at a volatile moment in Pakistani politics. PTI continues to press its street movement, demanding the release of party founder Imran Khan and contesting the validity of election results. However, PTI's strategy requires expanding its coalition beyond its core base to mount sustained pressure on the federal capital.
Surrendering these positions would require PPP to forfeit immense leverage over federal legislation, judicial appointments, and provincial coordination. Under President Zardari, the presidential office serves as a vital negotiating hub between political factions and key state institutions. Similarly, the Senate chairmanship gives PPP control over the parliamentary agenda during tense legislative votes.
For PPP leaders, the offer represents a high-risk proposition with minimal structural guarantees. While young voices within PPP have periodically expressed frustration over PML-N’s unilateral decision-making, the senior leadership under Asif Ali Zardari views constitutional offices as essential safeguards for the party's governance in Sindh.
Afridi’s statement places Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari under fresh political scrutiny. The PPP chairman has repeatedly criticized federal economic policy and administrative delays in developmental funds, fueling speculation about rift points within the governing alliance.
By demanding immediate resignations, PTI seeks to force PPP’s hand: either commit to a full-scale opposition strategy alongside PTI or accept full political co-ownership of the ruling coalition’s economic policies. If PPP rejects the offer, PTI gains a potent narrative tool, portraying PPP as a co-architect of the status quo rather than a genuine opposition force.
The power dynamics in Islamabad depend on whether PPP maintains its structural alliance with PML-N. Should PPP show any sign of relinquishing its constitutional security, the federal government would face an immediate mathematical and constitutional crisis in Parliament. For now, Afridi’s challenge puts the spotlight squarely on Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s willingness to risk constitutional authority for street politics.
Sohail Afridi demanded that PPP resign from the Presidency held by Asif Ali Zardari, the Senate Chairmanship held by Yousaf Raza Gillani, and the governorships of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
PTI stipulated that PPP must formally relinquish all government-backed constitutional perks and resign from state offices before taking part in joint street demonstrations.
PTI points out that PPP holds top constitutional offices awarded through alliance with PML-N while simultaneously criticizing federal economic policies to act like an opposition party.
